چکیده

With Asymmetric Multiple Description Coding we address the transmission case where there is a plethora of communication paths between sender and receiver, all with a different bandwidth and different levels of reliability (in terms of packet loss rate). For this scenario we have several possibilities for coding and transmission at our disposal, namely Round-Robin transmission, Layered Coding, Traditional (Symmetric) Multiple Description Coding, and Asymmetric MDC. Asymmetric MDC is a form of MDC, where each description is matched to a channels bandwidth and packet-loss rate. Redundancy is introduced and divided over the descriptions such that the average distortion under these lossy conditions is minimized. This paper first discusses the concept of AMDC as a generic case of MDC and introduces an implementation of AMDC based on erasure codes and layered coding. The optimal allocation of erasure codes and redundancy to each description is then found by optimization algorithms. We compare different algorithms and evaluate their complexity and performance.

Asymmetric Multiple Description Coding using Layered Coding and Lateral Error Correction

In this paper we present a method for Asymmetric Multiple Description Coding (AMDC) using Reed Solomon Channel Codes and Layered Coding. Asymmetric MDC can be used when channel conditions are not uniform. For instance peer-to-peer networks or heterogeneous (wired and wireless) networks may offer different channels with different bandwidths and loss characteristics. The AMDC encoder can be desig...

New coding schemes for the symmetric K -description problem

We propose novel coding schemes for the Kdescription problem with symmetric rates and symmetric distortion constraints. There are two main new ingredients in these schemes: the first one is akin to the method seen in the well-known butterfly network of network coding literature, and systematic erasure channel codes are applied on certain carefully chosen source coding component; the second appr...

A Novel Error Resilient Scheme for Wavelet-based Image Coding Over Packet Networks

This paper presents a robust transmission strategy for wavelet based scalable bit stream over packet erasure channel. By taking the advantage of the bit plane coding and the multiple description coding, the proposed strategy adopts layered multiple description coding (LMDC) for the embedded wavelet coders to improve the error resistant capability of the important bit planes in the meaning of D(...

A Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding

Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...

Wyner-Ziv Video Compression and Fountain Codes for Receiver-Driven Layered Multicast

The proliferation of video streaming applications that distribute data to a large number of clients motivates the design of fast and reliable multimedia delivery systems capable to adapt effectively to diverse transmission conditions. Receiver-driven layered multicast (RLM) efficiently addresses the issue of heterogeneity in clients’ available bandwidths and packet loss rates by shifting rate c...
